The worship at First Baptist Church, Abilene can best be described as authentic to the DNA, or culture within the church. Each Sunday music is offered in the service that reflects the rich and long heritage of the congregation, but also looks for newer expressions of worship. On any given Sunday worshipers offer music from Fanny Crosby, Isaac Watts, Keith & Kristyn Getty, Horatio Spafford, Charles Wesley, Stuart Hine, Stuart Townend, Philip Bliss, Chris Tomlin, John Newton, Bruce Greer, Paul Baloche, Franz Haydn, Darlene Zschech, and Ludwig Beethoven.
Our worship is accompanied with piano, organ, rhythm section, brass, woodwinds, strings, percussion, synthesizer, or no instruments at all. This rich variety of music speaks to the diversity of the congregation and creates a vibrant worship experience. It provides a worship encounter that is unique to the congregation, yet familiar and even comfortable to those who are searching for an expression of corporate worship that is free from the constraints of tradition or the expediency of the immediate.
Most who see the sanctuary with it’s magnificent stained glass and majestic pipe organ, would say that it reflects a worship style that is very staid and traditional. But when people come to worship, they are surprised with its expressive nature and the unique way that both instrument and voice combine to offer worship that inspires, informs, and illuminates us all with the truth of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
Adults, children, and youth, alike, participate in this multi-generational worship service. University students, emerging adults, young families, boomers, busters, empty nesters, and even our most “experienced” members have found a home in which to gather for worship. We invite you to discover the many ways in which we encounter the truth of God as we worship Him each week.
Come expecting the unexpected.
